This was part of my final project in one of my graduate classes at SCAD (Savannah School of Art & Design). This book shows you MY creative/design method. I say MY, because I have been in the industry for over a decade now, and I am still learning my own method. Each job, project, client, person and designer is different. You have to create your own process that suits and works for you.

We all know that sometimes in the real world, deadlines get in the way of actually using your defined method and spending the time you want on a nice final piece. You should still use your process, maybe just in less time.

The way I look at my process, is as follows:
Originate. Create. Express. Devise. Formulate. Develop. Produce.

Signs By Design

I have a very talented friend who started her own business. Each sign is hand painted, distressed, and sealed. I use high quality wood that has natural characteristics and flaws that make each sign unique. She hand paints each one personally-these signs make great gifts or personal decor for your own home.
When people ask me what I do, it seems like I always have to explain. In general terms, I usually say, “I make things pretty.” See that poster over there? That menu? That logo? Any brochure you get in the mail? I create that on the computer - I take words and make it pretty. Graphic design is not just that. Graphic design is a creative process of combining communication ideas to convey a specific message to a particular audience. It helps viewers quickly get the message, sell the product or service, or whatever is being communicated to them.

Graphic designers originate, create, devise, formulate, produce and develop one idea. Being a graphic designer you have the knowledge of more than typography, different kinds of paper, working with editors, photographers, clients, copy writers, web designers, publishers and printers. You have the knowledge of color, space, typography, photographs, paragraph styles and much more. You’re familiar with grid work, graphs, structure, and architecture.

By taking all the knowledge of one designer and using it in any medium, a successful outcome will be produced. A successful outcome will communicate and convey a specific message.

“Every child is an artist the problem is

staying an artist when you grow up.” – By Pablo Picasso

The definition of graphic design is not just what the dictionary says or how we describe it to our friends and family. It’s more than that.

It develops from a young age. Every child does artwork while growing up, but graphic designers have a unique “eye” for creativity from the beginning. Designers take this “eye” and continue to develop it over their lifetime, taking time to stay an artist as they grow.

Growing up you realize art is all around you. You become your own critic. You work on yourself and your work as a designer, to become a better designer.
